A minute of History
The orignal town planning began in 1300 and was based on the shape of a draughtsboard. 50 years Lluchmayor would witness the Battle of Lluchmayor (1349) fought between Pedro IV of Aragon and Jaime III of Mallorca; the mainland monarch won and the island king died. Lluchmayor was granted city status in 1916 by King Alfonso XIII.
Festivals
Lluchmayor is host to a variety of spectacular festivals, proudly celebrating Mallorcan tradition and culture. During the second week in August, Llucmajor celebrates the fiestas of Santa Candida. This festival combines cultural events, concerts and folk dance performances. The lively musical parade through the streets led by giants with typically large heads (gigantes y cabezudos) accompanied by the municipal band is a popular attraction.
During autumn one of the islands most popular festivals is Saint Miquel's day. A wide variety of products can be found on the second and third days of the fair which takes place on the two following Sundays. A whole host of events take place, including Gastronomy week, a handicrafts and industrial products exhibition, country fair and cattle competition are featured in the celebration.
In winter, the fiesta of Sant Antoni, patron saint of animals, takes place. Bonfires are lit in the streets around which villagers roast a variety of meats, sing songs and play the ximbomba, a popular medieval instrument.
Nature
Lluchmayor's mountainous areas belong to a protected nature area that rings the Randa Massif. Holm oaks, Aleppo pines and grasses decorate the hills whilst in the valleys you can find wild olive trees and olives, carob and almond trees.
Gastronomy
Llucmajor's best-known desserts are greixonera, a fresh cheese pie, and the emblematic ensaimada, plain or filled with cream or cabello de angel, a mixture of winter squash and sugar. Crespells (pastry stars), robiols (cheese or jam-filled pastries), almond sponge cakes, cheese cakes and apricot sponge cakes are some of the irresistable treats waiting to ruin your diet!
Llucmajor's farms are famous for the high quality of their fresh eggs which are an important ingredient for the local cuisine.
Wine, produced throughout the island, and traditional liqueurs such as Palo, Anis, Hierbas and Aguardiente, are other pleasures that Mallorca has to offer locals and tourists alike.
