Introduction

In the Mallorcan region of Levanta which is the second largest in Mallorca, lies the the township of Manacor, with an area that covers about 260 kilometres and a population of nearly 32,000 inhabitants.

General Information

Mallorca's second city is the nearest thing the island has to an industrial town. The narrow streets behind the church make a pleasant place to stroll and soak up the atmosphere of everyday Mallorca.

Where to go

Almost every visitor to Manacor will want to visit the pearl factory. Perlas Majorica is the best-known Mallorca's artificial pearl industry producing 50 million pearls a year, using the scales of a million fish. Close to the Cuevas del Drach is the Mallorca Aquarium, where many marine species can be seen. Juamica Tropical Park on the road between Portocolom and Porto Cristo contains around 1000 types of plants, among which small bamboo forests and a banana plantation are the most striking.

Art and Culture

Furthermore the palace museum Museo del Palau is in the Torre de Homenaje in the proximity and shows an amazing collection of miniature furniture of Antonio Sancho Comas. The entrance lies with Perlas Manacor (Plaza Rector Rubi 8).

Attractions

The church, Esglesia dels Delors de Nostra Senyora, was built on the site of a mosque and its minaret-style tower can be seen for miles. Look inside to see the figure of Christ- pilgrims queue up to kiss his bloodstained feet.

Sports

Traditionally, one of Manacor's most appealing tourist and sports attractions are the harness races which take place in the municipal hippodrome situated on the road to Palma in the direction of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar. There are several football fields, sports centres, swimming pools and French bowls pitches for you to enjoy. A club in Porto Cristo offers a good number of services for sailing and water sports enthusiasts and glass bottom boat trips are also available. The best option for visitors wishing to take the plunge are Es Domingos Gran and Petit, two beaches of fine sand with beautiful underwater landscapes.
