A minute of History
Its greatest development was originated by the decree of free ports in 1852 when the consequent intense commercial traffic contributed to the progress of a middle class intent on making the city grow.
Today, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a city with large landscaped areas which preserves the carm of the modernist architecture. Its treelined avenues, parks and squares are ideal for strolling because the green of Santa Cruz complements its peacefulness and the sunny climate which it enjoys all year
Location
Located on the northeast cost it is a bustling city and shipping port (one of the busiest in Spain and deepest in the world). The enormous harbour holds many container ships, cruise liners and inter island jet foils and ferries.
General Information
Shopping is excellent and most visitors begin at the Plaza de España on the seafront and work their way up Plaza de Candelaria, which offers excellent international brands at 'tax free' prices.
Where to go
The most frequented place in Santa Cruz is "La Plaza de España" by the sea, where the building "Cabildo de Tenerife" stands. Castillo, the commercial street par excellance, of the city starts from "Plaza de la Candelaria" which is at the side. Behind it is the sizteenth century churchof "La Concepcion". Higher up stands the charming "Plaza del Principe", next to which is the eighteenth century "San Francisco" church and the convent which houses the Municipal Musseum of Fine Arts.
Local Market
African Market (Santa Cruz) The famous Mercado Nuestra Senora de Africa is a dazzling bazaar of over 300 stalls selling fresh local produce. A short walk from bus station, look out for pink clock tower, get there as early as possible for the best of the fruits and veg. On Sundays surrounding the African Market you will find EL RASTRO FLEA MARKET look out for some high quality leather, hardware and crafts at bargain prices.

Natural History Museum (Santa Cruz)
A new museum representing Tenerife's history, from Spanish conquest - present day. Housed in a magnificent XVIth century building. Open Tues.- Sun. 10.
